A five-vehicle crash on southbound I-17 near the Anthem Way interchange has injured 10 people, three of which were “immediate” (or more serious), according to Capt. Dan Jarrett of Daisy Mountain Fire Department.
Southbound I-17 is closed in the area. Northbound I-17 has reopened after being closed to allow a helicopter to land. One victim was transported by helicopter and eight by ambulance to various trauma centers around the Valley. While the official cause of the accident is yet to be determined, there is some speculation that it might have been caused by rubbernecking, as emergency crews were tending to a separate rollover accident on the northbound side.
Capt. Jarrett reminds drivers to slow down and pay attention when flashing lights are seen.
