North Valley Christian Academy’s new approximate 70,000-square-foot classroom building and multi-purpose building, parking lot, athletic fields and tennis courts are slated for construction on a 9.5-acre parcel on the east side of 27th Drive. This is one of two adjacent parcels purchased by the private school in 2015, the other—a 3.5-acre lot north of Westland Drive—is to host an early childhood center for preschool through second grade once the need arises.

The new campus, scheduled to open in the fall of 2017, adds high school grades and will accommodate a student population of about 600. The multi-purpose building will house a full-size gymnasium, performing arts center and additional classroom space. NVCA currently operates out of a site in the Anthem Commerce Park with enrollment holding steady at about 150 students in grades Pre-K–8, according to Director Nate Kretzmann.

When construction plans were unveiled at a community meeting May 12, some from the bordering neighborhoods of Carefree Crossing and LaSolana (under construction) raised concerns about increased traffic and noise. Lighting was also a concern as the athletic fields will be developed along the southern end of the property bordered by LaSolana.

Kretzmann said the high school sports program would be part of the Arizona Interscholastic Association, but only day games can be held on NVCA’s fields. The City of Phoenix prohibited lighting along the south side of the football field near the homes.

“We don’t meet the requirements for AIA [games]… it’s a multi-purpose field, not a sports stadium,” Kretzmann said, so NVCA will need to rent field space for games.

Project manager Tim Scolaro, of the architectural firm Orcutt/Winslow, said 15-foot LED security lights would be situated along south side of school, but would stand approximately 150 feet away from homes. A 15-foot setback with high-density trees will serve as a buffer between the fields and nearby homes.

Groundbreaking is scheduled for August.
