Anthem Calls Special Council Meeting to Consider 4 Time-Sensitive Proposals

Anthem Community Council on Oct. 5 announced a special board of directors meeting for Thursday, Oct. 12 to consider four proposals that each involve some urgency. The agenda:

EPCOR request to purchase ACC land for a water-hauling station to serve New River and Desert Hills

EPCOR is seeking to buy ACC-owned land that borders both Anthem and Desert Hills Drive, to install a water-hauling station that would provide potable water to rural homes. Many residents of New River and Desert Hills have water trucked in, and the City of Phoenix has announced that as of Dec. 31, it will no longer supply the water, creating what residents say is a potential crisis. Anthem Farmer’s Market request to sell bottled wine and offer wine samples

The Arizona Community Farmers Market Association rents space in Anthem Community Park for its seasonal weekend market, which re-opens in late October. Del Rio Springs Vineyards wishes to join the market and offer wine samples as well as sealed bottles — both of which would require ACC approval.

“Since the Farmers’ Market is scheduled to begin later this month, we want to expedite consideration of the new request,” said ACC spokesperson Kristi Northcutt. “If approved, the applicant can begin processing paperwork so that they can start participating later this fall.”

Community Center remodel project modifications and cost additions

A project to remodel parts of both levels at the Community Center has been in planning stages for months. Plans submitted to Maricopa County were returned with requests for additional architectural design work. ACC staff estimates an additional estimated $11,446 is needed to complete this work.

Staff “needs Board approval to expend funds in order to continue with the bid and permitting process,” Northcutt said. At the meeting, staff will also to share with the board a planned approach to “investigating solutions to the natural light/sound issues related to the fitness room.”

Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce need for meeting space

The current Chamber and its previous incarnation have long held tightly-packed monthly meetings at a modest-sized conference room at the Hampton Inn. ACC is considering a trade that will provide the Chamber with meeting space at no charge.

“The Board will consider a proposal to provide space to the Chamber at the Civic Building for their monthly meetings, in exchange for Chamber membership and the opportunity to present our business awards at the Holiday Gala,” Northcutt said. “A decision on an agreement with the Chamber is needed as their Holiday Gala is quickly approaching.”
